First Came The Clunker Les Paul had struggled for years with the feedback generated by electric hollowbody guitars when their volume was cranked up. In the early s he bought an Epiphone Broadway hollowbody and retrofitted it with his own hand-wound pickups and a rectangular steel bar body brace.

Paul attached two wooden wings on either side of the slab giving The Log roughly the appearance of a conventional archtop guitar. And Finally, the Les Paul was Born It took several years and the introduction of a highly successful solidbody electric guitar by a certain California guitar company to bring Gibson around. The result was the Les Paul introduced in

Les Paul and Les Paul Serial Number Information

F-Spacing, Standard Spacing Why are there two different spacings? A long time ago in the 20th century, actually the electric guitar world was divided between Gibson and Fender designs. One of the differences between the two was string spacing. In general, Gibson chose a narrower string spacing at the bridge than Fender, and therefore the polepieces on Gibson humbuckers were closer together than the magnets on Fender pickups.

Our first humbuckers followed the original Gibson spacing, and we call them standard-spaced. When we released our first humbuckers with wider spacing, Floyd Rose bridges were very popular.

I am only able to work on the project in fits and starts on the odd weekend here and there, so this may be a loooooong process This is by no means a “how-to” article – I am a complete rookie to refinishing I only post the story here in hopes that others may learn from my mistakes! He said got it as an empty shell sans ALL hardware from a local music store’s “going out of business” sale ‘way back in the seventies, and assembled it to suit his purposes.

Even though he described it as unbelievably ugly in its current condition, I asked him to bring it with him next time he came by. It had, to my memory, the best feeling neck I had ever played. And, if I did the “Revolution”-period un-finished thang to it, a lot of the battle scars might just add character! I e-mailed my friend and offered to trade a Les Paul Special for it, but he graciously declined to even consider any trade until I had actually seen the guitar.

He wasn’t kidding, it looks horrible – an over-all well-worn, kinda beat-up condition, and ancient scotch-type packing tape over the f-holes which reveal a disgusting looking stuffing of white cotton – yuk! It has a broken tone pot, an unmatched assortment of knobs, and little of the binding around the neck is missing. It has several badly worn frets. There’s a “Santana” sticker on the lower bout “horn” that gives me a bad feeling He had hoped to get a BB King thang going with this guitar, but found even with the humbuckers it was just too feedback prone.

Gibson Serial Numbers General Gibson serial number information Gibson serial numbers are usually on the back of the guitars headstock; either stamped, inked or as a decal. Instruments with f-holes often have the serial number repeated on a label inside the guitar body. A lack of a serial number usually implies an instrument has been refinished.

First PAF pickups came about in on Gibson steel guitar models, and on on many Gibson spanish guitar models, and lasted to about to Nickel plated part models transitioned away from PAF pickups first around , since these guitars were sold in greater numbers.

PAF pickups of course have two internal coil bobbins under a 1. I guess we should start with a little history of the Gibson PAF pickup. By the mid s, Gibson wanted to counter the latest electric guitars introduced by Fender. Leo Fender had built a company that was a sizable competitor in the solid-body guitar market place. Gibson believed they could beat Fender with their high quality Les Paul, and by developing a low-noise pickup.

The problem with Gibson’s P and Fender’s single-coil pickups was inherent in their designs, allowing cycle hum noise to interfer with the sound. Seth Lover was the Gibson engineer assigned to solve the problem. Seth connected two single coil pickups in series opposed to parallel and connected the coils out-of-phase electrically and magnetically.

Originally the Epiphone models were made in the same factory as the Gibson guitars, by the same craftspeople using the same materials and often with the same features as Gibson models, but manufacturing of most of the Epiphone instruments was switched to Asia sometime around Today, Gibson primarily uses the Epiphone brand as their high value, lower priced overseas-built alternative to their top tier Gibson USA models.

All Epiphone models sold in the United States are subjected to a 15 point inspection process, and are “set up” in the USA by trained Gibson employees at their Nashville facility. There are several major electric guitar pickup types, however, and each has their own unique characteristics. The single coil pickup The first pickup design was a single-coil pickup. The pickup itself was you guessed it a single coil of wire, with 2 horseshoe shaped magnets. Arguably, the brand that made the single coil pickup its own was Fender. The characteristic tone of a single-coil pickup is bright and cutting.

The drawback of typical single-coil pickups is that they tend to be quite noisy, with mains hum a contributor to this. Other single coils tend to be somewhere between these two examples, depending on the width of the coil, as this greatly affects how bright or dark the tone will be.

Here is a great user review of our Soapbar P90 pickup set. I recently installed a set of JBE Soapbars in a Les Paul and wanted to tell you about my very positive experience with them. I also have a very nice Les Paul sunburst, but could never get it to compete on stage with the JBE-equipped Strat. No matter what humbucking pups I tried I that guitar, it just could not sound in the same ballpark as the Barden Strat.

I tried many different sets of boutique pickups in that guitar, from high to low output and everything in between. I ran it through a nice crunchy tube amp, and compared it with my humbucking Burst. Well, the P90 guitar sounded a lot better, and I felt there was good potential for that guitar to cut through and sound great on stage. I immediately ordered a set in Cream, installed them on the day of my next show, and played the guitar on stage that night. It has the fat…. Talk about a perfect solution to my problem!

That Goldtop is now my main stage guitar, although I still love my trusty Strat and use it on several tunes each night.

Use of an alnico V magnet isn’t particularly unique Gibson has used the same magnet on several pickups but that name has always stuck with that pickup. The pickup was designed by Seth Lover, the man who invented the humbucker. Gibson had been using the P90 pickup exclusively on all electric guitars for several years. Each of the polepieces is its own magnet. Rather than have a long rectangular magnet at the core of the pickup on which metal polepieces typically screws are attached and consequently magnetized, Lover designed this pickup with long alnico V magnets operating as the polepieces.

Jun 19,  · A 55 P90 should have a black grommet – though a few 50s P90s reportedly had the tan grommet, which is found mostly on early ’60s guitars. Most old P90s will still have the light brown paper wrapper shown in Mike20s picture.

There are some who prefer K pots or higher value caps, but everything I found said K with. You did confirm with what Walter said too. Question tho to Ryan, Walter, or anyone, what does one use for the pots? Linear or Audio taper? Split shaft or not? Audio or linear is a matter of taste, and split or solid shaft depends on the knobs you have. You get a nice smooth roll off with the 50s circuit. Linear will have everything at the end of the roll. How gradually do you want the volume to roll down?

I think it also depends on how you use the volume and the way you set your amp. If I use audio taper with my Tweed Deluxe. I will set the amp on 5 or 6 to get some nice overdrive. And when I roll back about a quarter of a turn I can almost clean the amp up. If I would use linear taper I would have to roll back too far to get it cleaner.
